a vacuuming system helping to solve an overlooked issue

PROJECT OVERVIEW
this project was about finding a problem to solve within the hand vacuuming market just as much as it was about finding my own aesthetic voice as a designer
The professors on this project wanted us to find a way of improving the hand vacuuming experience, while also understanding it. This meant taking apart hand vacuums and studying the internal components as well as the manufacturing methods used. Furthermore, I wanted to push my surface modeling skills, as well as focus on finding my aesthetic voice as a designer.

DESIGN GOAL

problems and pain points
Most hand vacuums don’t offer multiple batteries that are easy to insert and remove for continued vacuuming use.

Most hand vacuum batteries take at least 3 hours to recharge, thus interrupting the cleaning workflow if the battery dies out
‍
DIY methods of replacing the battery in hand vacuum can be complex AND 3rd party replaceable batteries can be expensive and/or unreliable

A design system including easy-to-replace batteries with a charging station that allows users to continue vacuuming while charging a low-on-power battery

pre-viz and ideation sketches
Initial pre-viz sketches ranged from experimental to conservative in features, form, and functionality. As well as a handful of more refined ideation sketches  focusing on form development and ergonomics direction

finding my aesthetic voice as a designer
Finding forms from design and nature that spoke to me and offered me a guidepost was equally as important for the project. As a sophomore entering into advanced studies it became time to decide how I wanted my design style to be perceived.

PRECI-02 PORTABLE CHARGING STATION
The PRECI 02 system includes a beautifully designed portable charging-station. When PRECI 02 runs out of battery power, insert the charging station into any near by outlet and plug its chord into PRECI 02 to continue vacuuming.
beautiful and functional
The charging station can accommodate many different distances without losing any slack.
Furthermore, PRECI-02 has a push to eject, to release the battery, simply press down and the battery ejects, making it easy to replace the battery when its out of power.
